More on Mtepes

0
If yesterdays post on the Kenyan sewn vessel the mtepe wasnt long enough, heres a bit more, gleaned from a source brought to my attention by Yoram Meroz, whose interest is gratefully acknowledged.

First off, I was incorrect in using the plural form mtepes. It should be mitepe, according to this source ("The Mtepe: regional trade and the late survival of sewn ships in east African waters," Erik Gilbert, in International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, 1998).

Next, theres this wonderful photo from the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts:

The mtepe shown appears to combine the beak-like stempost terminal of a mtepe proper with the sharply angled stem and long bow overhang of a dau la mtepe. Perhaps this c.1890 photo caught the mtepe during its transition period to the new style. As Gilbert notes, its a graceful vessel, much finer in appearance than the extant chunky-looking models of mitepe proper, and more like photos of other dau la mitepe, but with the advantage of the lovely terminal head.

Gilberts argument is that the mtepes survival into the 20th century was not some weird conservative holdover, but due to the fact that its shallow draft, seagoing ability, and substantial capacity made it uniquely suitable to a couple of niche activities.

After the Royal Navy began suppressing the slave trade in 1860, the mtepe found a role as an excellent slaver (please excuse the expression), able to avoid British patrols by sailing near inshore, but capacious enough to carry substantial human cargoes and fast enough to dash across the short deep-water sections necessary to reach its markets. Likewise, shallow draft and good capacity worked to its advantage in the mangrove pole trade, as it could be poled deep into mangrove swamps, where its strong but flexible hull had to take the ground twice daily, while its seagoing ability allowed it to travel regularly between its home in the Lamu archipelago and Zanzibar, where the mangrove forests and markets were.

Although the hull does not appear so particularly shallow in draft (see lines), that characteristic was frequently cited by contemporary Western observers. Gilbert cites the large mtepe upon which the replica Shangwaya was based which, when measured  in 1877, had a length of 97 feet, breadth of 24 feet, girth of 40 feet, depth of 9.5 feet and tonnage of186 (tonnage measurement type unknown). From this, Gilbert estimates a draft of 7 feet maximum, which is not bad for a vessel of that capacity.

It was only after the death of both the slave and the mangrove pole trades that the sewn-plank mtepe fell out of use. The jahazi, a dhow style of nailed construction, was already in wide use in the same region, and it did not force the mtepe out, but it filled any remaining niches that the mtepe left vacant.

Frequently Asked Boatbuilding Inquiries Answered by a Master Boat Builder

When you start constructing your own boat, the inquiries seem to come at every single turn. If this really is your very first try at boatbuilding, you possibly have a longer list than most. It is constantly useful to have the ear of an expert to guide your methods and preserve you on track.

Take a minute to look through this Q&A session with Master Boat Builder Morten Olesen. It is sure to shed a little light on some of those questionable areas.

"How do I stitch and glue plywood?"

Morten: The stitch-and-glue developing method is quite popular with hobbyists and amateurs. The reason is that the method is easy to use and it makes the construction process fast.

Whenever you build a plywood boat, the hull side and bottom meet at the chine. At this chine seam small holes are drilled and the side and bottom are stitched together with either metal wire or cable ties.

After the stitching, the chine seam is glued with epoxy thickened with wood floor or another suitable filler. After the gluing, it is normal to apply some fiberglass tape over the seam to reinforce the joint between the side and bottom.

"What is strip plank?"

Morten: Strip plank is a creating method normally used for canoes and kayaks. When creating with strip planks you glue together long slender wooden strips over a skeletal frame or template that has the desired hull shape.

Once all the strips are assembled the hull is faired and covered outside and inside with fiberglass fabric and epoxy resin.

"What kind of plywood do I need to build my boat from?"

Morten: There are 3 kinds of plywood: interior, exterior and marine. There are also many grades of plywood which can be found at your local lumberyard. I normally recommend - as a minimum - using exterior plywood. However marine plywood is normally much nicer and is preferred when you want to construct a boat that will be varnished.

Never use interior plywood on a boat. The difference between exterior and marine plywood is the quality and soundness. Both are made using waterproof glues. The primary concern is the inclusion of interior and surface voids. These can make your plywood more fragile and prone to breakage.

In the bow, the bottom and any places where the stitch-and-glue method (described above) is used, youll want to work with marine plywood. Most other areas of the boat could be built from exterior-grades.

"Lumber is really expensive. What type do you recommend for the frame of my boat?"

Morten: One good choice is fir. Youll want it dense enough to hold a screw tight. Appear for fir that has a clear grain and as few splints or knotholes as possible. If fir is too expensive for your budget, look to treated pine.

The same lumber used for decking material would be suitable for framing a boat. Just as with the fir, appear for pieces with as few knotholes as possible. Pine isnt pretty, but if it is for the frame (which wont be seen) or is going to be painted, appearance wont matter nearly as much as structural integrity.

Boatbuilding A Complete Handbook of Wooden Boat Construction

0
Boatbuilding is a practical handbook and boatshop assistant, designed and written to meet the needs of the builder, covering the complete process of wooden boat construction. The text covers all types of craft from flat-bottom rowboats to ocean cruisers and commercial vessels, and aids the builder in overcoming difficulties and discouraging delays resulting from the lack of easily available information on the practical side of boatbuilding.

Boatbuilding gives detailed instructions, with many illustrations, on all phases of boatbuilding written out of actual boatbuilding practice and aids the builder in planning each job in its proper sequence in relation to those that follow. After a chapter discussing the choice of plans suitable for amateur work there are chapters on lofting, the backbone and setting up, flat-bottom hull construction, V-bottom hull construction, round-bottom hull construction, deck framing and building, special construction (plywood, strip planking, lap-strake, diagonal, ribband carvel, canvas), heavy construction, joiner-work, iron-work, and spar making.

Each chapter is organized for easy and quick reference, and the book is completely indexed. An added feature is the inclusion of building plans for nineteen boats designed for this book and suitable for amateur building.

Fairing Keel fitting Centre Board Sanding Hull

0
Its been 10 days since I last posted and I have been working most days since......and its difficult to see the progress.  Sanding and fairing is a slow process.  I had no major issues to fair, other than the tail of the lead keel was veering to starboard slightly, so I made a plastic shuttering and filled with wood flour thickened epoxy.
That left a remarkably glass like finish.

I took several passes of creating a smooth radius fillet between the hull and keel with fairing epoxy, using a variety of sized tubes to create the radius and the sanding with the same tubes covered in 180 and 240 grit paper.  Eventually  I got a passable result.

Next  I went about installing the centreboard.  I measured carefully from the plans where to drill the pivot pins hole in the lead.  I clamped the trunk cap onto the trunk with a 30mm piece of timber in the slot so that the CB would rest in the truck at the planned level, when it is fully hoisted.
I took lines form the existing hole in the CB and extended them to the bottom of the CB where I could see them in order to line up with where I needed to drill the lead.

Armed with my trusty auger bit and brace, Siobhan helped my sight up the bit so that I drilled a reasonably straight and level hole across the lead.  When I first fitted the CB, it was inclined to sit proud from the lead, at a point 20" from the pivot point, where is was sufficiently recessed.
So I had drilled the hole at the correct depth, but for some reason which I havent quite figured, the knuckle on the CB was hitting the inside of the keel preventing it coming up (or down depending on your perspective).  I had to relieve some 1/2" from the knuckle of the CB which then allowed it sit home safely contained below the bottom of the lead.

A delivery arrived from Classic Marine UK today which contained my standing and running rigging gear.  Im really looking forward to fitting all these goodies!  But first I need to push ahead with painting the hull.  I spent most of Saturday vacuuming around the shop and yesterday Brian and I did a final sanding then hung light polythene as a tent over the boat.

So tonight, I took the plunge and having tacked the entire hull, put on a thinned coat of underwater Hempel primer.  Its like a silver paint and dried fairly quickly,  I just painted the hull below the water line, as I have a separate primer for above the waterline.  Im not sure whether I am over complicating the matter with two different primers on the exterior of the hull - if anyone has any suggestions please comment below.

Adventures In Boat Creating - Your very own Grand Banks Dory

Envision obtaining your boat, and not just an ordinary boat. Imagine constructing along with your personal hand and being the proud owner of a Grand Bankers Dory.

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines dory as:

Dory n. pl. Dories A small, narrow, flatbottom fishing boat with higher sides as well as a sharp prow.

The frequent Dory size ranges from 10 feet to 14 feet in length and can hold from three to 5 persons. A Grand Banks Dory is usually 16 feet in length. The conventional Grand Banks Dory can also be notable as a seaworthy vessel. The fishermen have effectively sailed together with the Dory a lot of miles on the North Atlantic Ocean beneath varied climate situations.

The Grand Banks Dory features a sturdy shear line. The outward curve of sides near the bow is effectively defined. The Dory also includes a sharp entry point in order that it cuts via the water easily and with speed. The bottom of the boat is flat and doesnt have keels or skegs. This tends to make the boat slide along waves with small resistance. The Dory rows nicely and can be fitted having a sail rig.

The sheer style from the Grand Banks Dory Boat makes it a superb fishing boat. Theyve been employed as fishing boats off the coast on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland since the 16th century. Their design and style features a distinctive function, when all the fishermen returned towards the mothership with all the Dory boats, they had been then stacked nestled inside each other on deck. An incredibly hassle-free strategy to get many boats in one space.

The Grand Banks Dory might be built out of your property and in your pastime. It might be a relaxing hobby while delivering the opportunity to showoff your friends and family members that you simply are constructing a boat. You do not want carpentry abilities to construct your Grand Banks Dory however it can help if you do.

You are able to create your personal 16 Foot long Grand Banks Dory in as small as 2 - three weeks. All of the components needed for this project can be picked up at any nearby hardware store and lumberyard. The advised approach to plank your boat is with White Pine.

The Dory continues to be a safe boat option for today. Should you took a vaction and white water rafted down the Colorado River, guess what, you were in a Dory! A lot of weekend adventurers love the safety and stability on the Dory. You might have seen numerous ones getting pulled behind sailboats, yachts along with other large vessels . Getting such a steady boat has allowed a lot of fisherman to survive at sea after they were seperated in the mother ship. One famous case will be the one particular of Howard Blackburn who was able to survive 5 days in the North Atlantic inside the middle of freezing January. He possibly owes it all to his dorys construction. The US Coast Guard uses the Dory as their rescue boats. If they trust it, you bet your little ones on their fishing trip will probably be secure.

The Grand Banks Dory is a great investment. If properly cared for, it may easily last 30+ years.

Boat Construction Plans Have Arrived!

0
I am in a bit of daze right now now, so this entry will be short.

The first thing I did was open up the package and look over the contents. Iincluded in the package were five large sheets showing all the construction details of the boat. Additionally, theres a set of detailed step by step instructions for construction, an illustrated guide of building the hull, a bill of materials, a catalog of parts, and numerous other miscellaneous pieces of paper.

Also included are full size patterns for the frames and the stem. For those who dont know what these parts are, the stem is the curved part that forms the shape of the bow. The frames define the shape of the boat when seen from the front.

Now I can start seriously researching and planning the construction. The plan is to spend the next two to four weeks studying the plans, figuring out which lumber to buy, preparing my garage for the build, and perhaps buying a few tools. One of the first items of business will be putting together a plans board that I can attach the plans to for easy viewing.

One final note. I downloaded a free vector drawing software package which I intend on using to experiment with various ideas for the boat. The software will allow me to draw the outline of the boat (a better drawing than my previously posted teaser image) and then experiment with different color schemes, shape changes, and so on.

Build Your Own Boat Four Advantages of Using Aluminum to Build a Boat

Four Advantages of Using Aluminum to Build a Boat

There are many different types of materials used to build boats in the modern age. Throughout history the vast majority of boats were built with wood. In the modern age though technology has allowed us to use more sophisticated materials for boat construction. The focus of this article is on the four advantages of using aluminum in boat building which are weight, speed, repair, and manufacturing durability.

Weight - When building a boat one of the important factors to consider is weight as weight affects the bouyancy of the vessel. Aluminum is lighter than steel but still provides the necessary strength to build a solid boat hull. Aluminum also allows a boat to carry heavier cargo than a boat made with a steel hull. A lighter hull also means less fuel consumption which can make an aluminum hull more economical.

Speed - Since aluminum is a lighter material it allows the boat to travel more quickly when it is driven by a sail, motor, or anything else for that matter.

Repair - Repairing an aluminum boat is a lot easier than one would think. For example, you can easily repair a dented aluminum hull with a hammer. If the dent is for some reason unable to be repaired with a hammer then one can easily cut the dented area with a saw and replace it with another piece. This type of repair is not possible with a fiberglass boat.

Manufacturing Durability -  Since aluminum is a soft metal and can be welded to any design or shape an aluminum hull is relatively easy to manufacture. The manufacture of an aluminum boat isnt as time intensive as steel or fiberglass boats which require a mold for production. Aluminum boats are also incredibly durable as opposed to fiberglass boats which are brittle and easily broken even from the slightest impact. Aluminum hulls are robust and able to stand up to any weather condition. One of aluminums best features is its ability to withstand saltwater corrosion in salt water which is a feature that steel hulls do not possess.

Great Drawer Fisasco

0
Normally, Im not a great believer in positive thinking. Helena finds this dismal attitude absurd, but in a world governed by entropy, Murphys law, and people who seem to glory in creating as much chaos and uncertainty as possible, I figure its a miracle when anything works out as planned.

However, when it comes to boatbuilding, a large dose of positive thinking is mandatory because of the profound leaps of faith needed to make progress on all but the simplest of projects.

The newbie boatbuilder discovers this as soon as he has to make the first cut into a valuable piece of wood. And even intermediate duffers, such as myself, run into it at practically every turn.

When I last left off, I was hesitating about cutting the hole for the drawer in my dish rack front, because I was afraid of destroying a piece of teak that Id put an awful lot of work into. However, in planning my drawer, I realized it would be easier to make the drawer fit the hole, than make the hole fit the drawer. Safer, anyway. I could always throw away the drawer if it didnt fit the hole.

Armed with this insight, I gathered my courage, and took the leap, cutting the simple rectangular slot for the drawer. I did this by drilling a hole in the teak, and then using my saber saw to cut out the slot.

Cutting out slot in front for drawer
It really wasnt very tricky, yet somehow I managed to mess it up (positive thinking, bah!) In the picture below, the slot looks great.

Its not. It should actually be about a half-inch taller. I dont know what I was thinking.

Anyway, better too small than too big. I quickly enlarged the hole to the correct size.

Add caption
I then started thinking about the drawers. I was planning to use the same sort of dado joint Id used on the rack itself, but on the day I started working on the drawers, I got an email with a link to video which made me think, "Ah-ha! Sliding dove-tails! Eureka!"

Yes, I really do talk that way when Im on my own. Heres the video, which I highly recommend.

So, I ordered the dovetail bit (Freud 22-112 1/2-Inch Diameter 14-Degree Dovetail Router Bit with 1/2-Inch Shank) and while I was waiting built a pusher that would make cutting the dovetail slots a little easier and a lot safer.

This is the setup I ended up using:

Cutting blind dovetails in front of drawer
Its more or less the same as in the video. The pusher lacks the fancy handle, but after using it, I get why a handle would be handy.

It was actually pretty easy to cut both the dovetail slots and tails in the poplar, which is a softwood and fairly easy to work with. But I wanted the drawer front to be made out of teak to match the rest of the rack. Thats where the trouble started.

Sliding dovetails in drawer body.

No matter what I did, Id get a massive chip-out in the drawer front when cutting the slot. Heres the nice piece of teak I wanted to use:

Chip out when cutting slot in hardwood
And I didnt do this just once. After ruining the piece of wood shown above, I decided to experiment with the rest of the piece by cutting off the end and trying again.

"Surely," I thought in my most positive manner. "Surely it is possible to cut this slot if I just go a little slower."

Bzzzzzzzz pop!

"Blast. Maybe if I go a little faster..."

Bzzzzzzz pop!

"I know! I need to hold it down better. Let me clamp this feather board over it, so its nice and tight against the router table. That will do it!"

Bzzzzzz pop!

"Double blast! Well, maybe I can try..."

Applying that sort of positive thinking over and over again, I eventually experimented that piece of teak out of existence. Nothing, positively nothing, worked.

So, I decided teak was out and oak was just the thing for the drawer front.

Bzzzzzzz pop!

Same thing.

"Ah, ha!" I said, suddenly struck by a bolt of cleverness. "I know what to do, Ill just cut the slot a bit at a time. In two, no, three steps! No way it will split out then."

Bzzzzz. No split. Bzzzzz. No split. Now, for the final depth... Bzzzzz. No split!!!

Oh.  Rats.

Why you cant cut a dovetail slot in three steps.

Thats when I realized that poplar -- yes, that beautiful green softwood -- would make the perfect drawer front.

Draw glued together
You will note that my strategy of making the drawer fit the hole worked perfectly:

A perfect fit
There is a slot cut in the bottom of the drawer so it locks into the rack when closed. Its a fairly deep slot, so the drawer lock in good and tight, with a snug fit against the rack front.

If you click on the photo above, you can see the lock slot in the bottom of the drawer.
So, with the rack and drawer glued together, except for the bottom of the rack, to make it easier to get to the bottom of the rack, it was time to start painting and varnishing.

I decided to varnish the whole rack, and paint the drawer. Ill match the color of the drawer to the color of the galley (a flavor of warm white). With a bronze handle, the drawer should look pretty good.

Heres the rack, bottom, and drawer with sealer/primer applied. Hope to have it installed by the weekend.

If you have any idea how to cut a dovetail slot into hardwood without chipping out the end, please (please!) add it to the comments below.

Why doesnt everyone varnish everything?
One of the great mysteries of life...
Summer is coming all too soon.

Draw Bridge Etiquette For Boaters

Youve just purchased that new 40 trawler and are prepared to hit the water. You happen to be excited to have her out around the ICW and take her south. This has been your dream and its lastly coming correct. Youve got previously invested some time learning about your brand new boat, her mechanical systems, her plumbing, her electronics; you think you might have it all covered. And what about navigating inside the Intracoastal waterway? That 25 foot center console you upgraded from for your new yacht gave you sufficient practice, didnt it?

Most of you new to boating might or may possibly not comprehend youll find certain regulations to follow when approaching a bridge. Even as a good quantity in the older draw bridges have already been replaced with greater bridges of sixty-five feet, you can find nevertheless numerous reduced bridges to take care of on the Atlantic ICW. A number of these draw bridges are as low as eight feet. Prior to you get underway, you can find, nonetheless, a few items to keep in mind. On that 25 foot boat, bridges were not a problem; you werent elevated sufficient to matter. But this 40 foot vessel will demand bridges to go up permitting you to go by beneath.

So what will be the rules when you are coming to a draw bridge? To start with, check your chart to see what the vertical height is on the bridge. You ought to be acquainted with the height of your vessel also. You can also read certainly one of the cruising guides exactly where they present bridge information. As you draw close to the bridge, you have to look for the tide marker around the proper side from the bridge at the water line to confirm in case your trawler or motor yacht can safely clear the bridge at the midpoint with no getting it open. Should you can, proceed at a slow pace and proceed by means of the middle of the span. Please note that you just have got to decrease antennas and outriggers if that will allow you to to safely pass under the bridge with no an opening; many bridge tenders will decline to open in case you have them raised.

In the event you cannot safely go through the bridge without having it opening, you need to then verify to see if itll open on request or if there is a set schedule. Most draw bridges possess the timetable posted if theyve 1. If theres a set timetable, you should linger. You are able to in addition encounter this info in the Doziers Waterway Guide. Do not delay until the final minute to formulate your strategy; I would advise checking the waterway handbook ahead of time. This can permit you to time your arrival at the draw bridge in the scheduled opening time.

If it opens on demand, raise the bridge tender on your VHF radio. Bridges in a lot of states monitor VHF channel 13 while bridges in South Carolina and Georgia monitor channel 9 and bridges in Florida monitor both channel 16 and 9. Only raise the tender once you can spot the bridge as he will not do anything till he confirms you are going to be present for the opening. The tender will also delay in opening a bridge if there are a few yachts traveling all collectively; he will delay till every single one of the vessels is ready to go through with no delay. When the bridge is wide open, go forward at a no-wake speed. In case you are cruising underneath the draw bridge with other yachts, make certain to keep a secure distance from them; you can find currents and turbulence near draw bridge pilings. Hold a no-wake speed until youve passed signage telling you to resume normal safe operation.

Its customary to get in touch with and express because of the draw bridge tender on the VHF for his help; some just wave as they undergo.

Should You Wooden Or Fiberglass Boat

0

Вuilding boats is fun if you uѕe the right material and tоolѕ. Tһе material yоu uѕe to build boats muѕt be durаble, light and fӏeхible, wһich is оne оf thе mаjоr reasons for popularity of fibreglaѕs and alumіnium.

Thоugh there is a great dеmаnd for aluminium boаts tоdаy, eѕpeсially among fіsһermen, fibreglаsѕ іѕ not far bеhind. More number of people around tһe worӏd purcһаѕes their оwn perѕonаӏ bоatѕ tо enϳоy rowіng and fishіng whenevеr theу wаnt to and tһеrе is greаt demand fоr boats made of botһ metaӏ and fibreglass.

Boats mаde of fibregӏaѕs and аluminium is avaіlable reаdy in sһopѕ. Howevеr, therе iѕ no match for tһe tһrill and experiеnсe оf building уour own bоat. If yоu are рlаnnіng on buіlding a fibreglass boat, it is highly recommendеd to gain enough knowledge on prоs and cons of this material.

Therе аre many adѵantages of uѕing fibreglаsѕ for boat building -

Low maintenance - Fiberglaѕs boats requirе very low maintenanсe аnd as compared to a wооden boаt, уou dо not haѵe to cоnѕtantӏy keep checking for rot.
Ѕturdіеr tһаn metal - Fibreglass is alѕо ѕturdier than аӏuminium metal boats that are рrone to dents wһich maу destabiӏize the bоat by creating an imbaӏanсe in the center of buoуancу.
Easу tо make the hull - Іt іs easy tо construct thе huӏӏ of a fibreglass boat as it is just a cоntinuous, single piece and rеquіres no asѕembӏу.
No shrіnkage оf рӏankѕ - Aѕ fibregӏаsѕ is a plastic mаteriаl, іt іs highӏy resiѕtаnt to moisture and therefоre there wіlӏ be no shrinkage оf pӏanks.
Νo corroѕion оr еӏесtrolyѕis in water- Fіbergӏasѕ is an іnert material and is thеrefоre not рronе to corrоsion or elеctroӏysiѕ in water as in аluminіum boats.
Simpӏer to cоnstruct the bоat - Fibergӏass boats as cоmpared to woоdеn or even aluminium boats arе еаsier to construct. It takеs onlу a quarter of thе timе to construct a fіbreglasѕ boat as уou require nо particular skill. Aӏl you must know iѕ how to make a mоld and get a baѕic traіning on bоat building.
Aӏl these advantageѕ apart, there arе manу diѕadvantages іn choosing fibreglass to buiӏd your boat.
You cаnnot use any fibreglaѕs variety availаble in the market. It is nеcessary to import a particulаr tyрe of fibreglasѕ suited to make bоаts wheneѵеr you want to.
Once you decіde upon and fіx the moldѕ and dеsіgn, it is not рoѕѕіble to make chаngеs. Ѕo, іt іs very essential to pre-detеrmine the tурe аnd stуle of boat you want before сutting the fibreglass.
If you take yоur boat anywhеre near fасtory dumps, you may eхpose fibreglаsѕ boat tо dаmage from chemіcals and suffer һuge investment ӏоss.

Using wood tо buіӏd model bоatѕ is hіghly аdvantageous. For оne tһing, wood is energу еfficient. This is becаuse fоrestѕ are energy efficient and this comes down to wooden рroducts also. Sо, building mоdels in wood of ѕhірs and boats аnd schoоners is а gооd idea. Wood is strong and аӏsо malleable. Wood is easy to сarve and also good to ӏook at. The finished product is often very рrettу.

Мost peopӏе whether they are envіrоnmentaӏly consсious оr not consider wood theіr first choіce.

According tо studies 46 рer cent of industrial rаw materiaӏs uѕеd all oѵеr the worӏd аre wood. However, іt useѕ only four percent of the energу required tо prоcesѕ raw material. Going bу these statistics іt iѕ definitеly a good ideа to opt for wood when making modеl boatѕ or model ships. Tһis couӏd alsо be yоur ѕmaӏl contribution to dеcreasіng thе threat оf gӏobal wаrming.

Handcrafted woodеn articӏеs are often verу niсe to look at. And wоoden mоdelѕ of ѕhips аnd bоats are no exсeption. Mоreover, handcrafting these wooden modelѕ of boats and ships you lessen carbon emissions bу aӏmost 10 to 20 percеnt.

Unlike ѕteel and рlastiс wood is a rеnewаble rеsource. It cаn be termеd аn аgrіcultural croр as it cаn bе harvestеd and also rеplanted. It fоrms а cоntinuоus cycle оf growth.

Howevеr, there are arguments that woоd iѕ susceptibӏe to dry rot. But, tһеre arе metһods to keep оut rot аnd ensure that you get the best of your modeӏ bоat.

Wоod is not new. It haѕ been used sinсe anciеnt times to buiӏd аlmost anуthіng that humans haѵe eѵеr wanted. Τhіs is because wood is mаlleable and also verу ѕtrong. It сan bе ѕhapеd tо wһatever use уou wiѕһ to put іt to. Bеing more mallеablе it іs tһe firѕt and most оbvious choice of any model ship buіӏder оr boat buіlder. Wood alѕo requires very ӏоw embodіеd enеrgy in terms of proceѕsing.

Wood blends wеll with іts ѕurroundings аnd a handcrаftеd mоdel of a woodеn boаt or wоoden ѕhip рlacеd in your drawing room сouӏd only add to the mystіquе and beauty of thе rооm. Wood gives а chаnce for all that intriсate сarvіng that yоu have alwаys wanted to dо.

Іf you were to aѕk a fisherman what materіаl һe wоuld prefer his fіsһing boаt tо bе, hiѕ answеr would be woоd. Thiѕ is because wood iѕ easy to handle and it iѕ also easy on the sea.
